Down by the Creek was commissioned by The New York Times Style Magazine in April of 2019 during Soleimanpour's Off Broadway run of NASSIM. Soleimanpour was given 48 hours to write a short play to accompany the images of esteemed  photographer Eugene Richards. Richards' images were shot in rural Arkansas and Soleimanpour was asked to accompany the photos with text in response to these images.

 

The play was published in The New York Times Style Magazine's 2019 issue themed "America 2024."
